SKILLED MIGRATION PROGRAM

This program allows foreigners who are qualified and /or experienced in a required profession to migrate to Australia. Your occupation must be on the Medium and Long-term strategic list.

 STEPS

​

1. Check your Eligibility - make sure you are eligible for the Skilled Migration Program.

2. Submit an EOI through in order to apply for Skilled Independent or Skilled Nominated Visa.

3. Wait for Invitation – you must be invited by the Australian government to apply for the skilled visa.

4. Apply for Visa – After receiving an invitation you will have 60 days to lodge a visa application.

SKILLED INDEPENDENT VISA

SUBCLASS 189

The Skilled – Independent Visa Subclass 189 is a point based permanent visa for applicants who are not sponsored by an employer or an eligible family member nor nominated by a state or territory government. Applications are by invitation only.

ELIGIBILITY:

You must:

  • Submit an Expression of Interest

  • Have an occupation that is on the relevant Occupation List

  • Have a suitable Skills Assessment in their nominated occupation

  • Be less than 50 years of age when the invitation is issued

  • Meet the English language requirements

  • Be able to score at least 60 on the Points Test

SKILLED NOMINATED VISA

SUBCLASS 190

The Skilled – Nominated Visa Subclass 190 is a points based permanent visa for applicants nominated by a state or territory government. Priority Processing arrangements apply to this visa.
Applications are by invitation only

ELIGIBILITY:

You must:

  • be nominated by the state or territory

  • have an occupation that is on the relevant Occupation List

  • have a suitable Skills Assessment for your nominated occupation

  • be less than 50 years of age when the invitation is issued

SKILLED REGIONAL VISA

SUBCLASS 489

The Skilled Nominated / Sponsored (Provisional) Visa Subclass 489 is a points based visa for applicants nominated by a state or territory government or sponsored by an eligible relative living in a designated area in Australia.  Applications are by invitation only.

ELIGIBILITY

You must:

  • submit an Expression of Interest

  • be nominated by state or territory or sponsored by an eligible relative

  • have an occupation that is on the relevant skilled occupation list

  • have a suitable skills assessment in your nominated occupation

  • be less than 50 years of age when the invitation is issued

  • meet English language requirements

  • be able to score at least 60 on the points test (including the 5 points for nomination / sponsorship)

This visa might lead to the permanent Skilled Regional Visa.

Priority processing arrangements apply to this visa.

There are three pathways to the visa:

  • the Extended stay pathway

  • the Invited pathway

  • the Subsequent entry pathway

Nominated by a state or territory.

Each state or Territory has its individual Occupation List and criteria for nomination. Also, there are obligations that the nominating state or territory will require applicants to meet, should they nominate you. These include:

  • You must live, study and work in regional and low population-growth metropolitan area and comply with any residential conditions specified by the State or Territory government in your nomination.

  • If you later apply for a permanent residence you will need to prove that you have spent the specified time in a regional and low population-growth metropolitan area.
