Extend Your Stay in Australia
Your Work and Holiday Visa is about to expire—what’s next?
Don’t worry! If your Work and Holiday Visa is coming to an end, there are options to extend your stay in Australia.
First things first.
Before planning your next steps, it’s important to check your current visa status, conditions, and expiration date. You can do this easily through the VEVO Check, or by reviewing your visa grant letter.
If your visa has a "no further stay" condition, you must leave Australia before it expires. However, if there are no such restrictions, you can explore options to apply for a new visa before your current one ends, giving you the chance to continue your Australian adventure.
(!) To remain lawful, you must submit your new visa application before your current visa expires. Once you do, you’ll typically be granted a Bridging Visa A (BVA), which allows you to stay in Australia until your new visa application is processed and a decision is made. Keep in mind that a BVA becomes invalid if you leave Australia, meaning you won’t be able to return unless you first apply for a Bridging Visa B (BVB).
Planning ahead ensures a smooth transition and avoids any legal complications.
Usually while on a bridging visa you have the same rights as on the previous visa.
Option 1: Extend Your Work and Holiday Visa
If you’ve enjoyed your Work and Holiday experience and want to keep the adventure going, you may be eligible to apply for a second or even third Work and Holiday visa.
What You Need to Do:
-
Complete the required specified work in a designated regional area. This typically includes jobs in industries like farming, construction, tourism or hospitality.
-
Meet the eligibility requirements, such as age and health criteria.
If you’re up for the challenge, this can be a great way to explore more of Australia while earning some extra cash.
Option 2: Switch to a Student Visa
Not interested in farm work or regional jobs? A Student Visa is a fantastic alternative that allows you to stay in Australia while pursuing your education.
Why Choose a Student Visa?
-
You can study anything from English courses to vocational training or higher education.
-
Work part-time while studying (up to 48 hours per fortnight while course is in session and unlimited time during breaks).
-
Explore a long-term pathway to skilled migration or career opportunities.
Option 3. Employer-Sponsored Visa
If your occupation is on Australia’s Skilled Occupation List, you may be eligible for an Employer-Sponsored Visa, allowing you to live and work in Australia through employer sponsorship. These visas, such as the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa or Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) Visa, are excellent pathways for skilled workers in demand.
If your occupation isn’t on the list but you dream of calling Australia home, consider studying a qualification that leads to an in-demand profession. By completing relevant education and gaining work experience, you can position yourself for skilled migration or sponsorship opportunities in the future.
